IRS Releases New Draft of form W-9

November 19, 2014

On November 7, 2014 the IRS released a new form W-9 draft which is designated for Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification.  See http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-dft/fw9--dft.pdf for the early release instructions for this draft form. Make sure you understand that this is only a draft and until it is officially released as final continue to use the August 2013 W-9 form. While it is true that the IRS will only allow for the release of draft forms when they are fairly confident there will be no further changes they warn against preemptively taking this as final. To learn about revisions and details on drafts see http://www.irs.gov/Forms-&-Pubs  where you can find each form and research recent changes.  Although the shortcomings of the agency are apparent, presenting pertinent information online is not one of them.  You can access virtually any material on reporting and also submit commentary on drafts.  If tax reporting and compliance is a vital part of your occupational role we urge you to follow our news updates and also be familiar with the resources that are offered by the IRS online.
