Supreme Court Upholds Affordable Care Act Subsidies
Just today, the US Supreme Court released their decision to uphold the nationwide tax subsidies for the Affordable Care Act. This comes as a big relief for many because of the amount of time, restructuring, and implementation planning that has already been poured into the law. Not only has America invested time but, they have also invested a great deal of hope in improving the dilapidated healthcare system we currently have.
Over 10.2 million people have already signed up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. More significantly, over 6.4 million Americans were at risk of losing their current subsidies that helped them pay for coverage if their state did not set up exchanges. The justices came to the decision in the 6-3 ruling which concluded that the 8.7 million people who currently receive subsidies to make insurance affordable do not depend on what state the reside in and therefore should not have their credits withheld due to varying state exchanges.
“Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not to destroy them,” Roberts wrote in the majority opinion. “If at all possible, we must interpret the Act in a way that is consistent with the former, and avoids the latter.” – CNN 2015.
Since the Affordable Care Act was designed to decrease the number of uninsured Americans deciding against maintaining ACA subsidies would have been disruptive and counter intuitive to the social welfare of a huge demographic. With this big victory in Obama’s largest push for change we can expect to see the system in place through 2016 and onward.
